From WITN TV’s website: The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is warning of a scam after an alert Greenville resident reported a phone call that just didn't seem to add up
The sheriff's office says the resident received a phone call Tuesday from a "David Dixon" who told her that a package was waiting for her at the Greenville airport. Dixon informed her that he needed a check for $350 to pay the taxes on the package. After the conversation, she questioned the possible exchange and called the sheriff's office.
A deputy called the Washington State number and got detailed information about the $3.5 million that had come through United States Customs, and was now waiting for the Greenville resident to pick up.
The deputy was even given a bank name and routing number to confirm the transaction. The bank, located in Greenville, said that the configuration for the routing number was not valid, and confirmed the suspected scam.
The deputy called Dixon back to notify him of this information, and he disconnected the call.
The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says it is advising residence of this scam in hopes that no one will become a victim.
